Accuracy and verification
We verify names, dates, locations, documents, quotations and material claims before publication. When information is still developing, we describe what is confirmed, identify uncertainty and update the story as reliable facts emerge.
Sources and attribution
We prefer first-hand reporting, primary documents, official records and on-the-record sources. Information from another publication is attributed and linked when practical. Anonymous sources are used only when the information has public value and the source faces a credible reason not to be named.
Fairness and right of reply
People and organizations facing significant criticism should receive a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication when time and circumstances allow. Headlines, thumbnails and social posts must reflect the substance of the reporting and must not distort a quote or overstate a claim.
Independence
Editorial coverage is decided by the newsroom. Advertising, sponsorships, political interests, gifts or personal relationships must not determine news judgments. Paid or sponsored material is labeled so readers can distinguish it from independent reporting.
Conflicts of interest
Contributors should disclose financial, political, family or professional relationships that could reasonably affect their work. Editors may reassign coverage, add disclosure or decline an assignment when independence could be questioned.
Sensitive reporting
We use added care when reporting on children, survivors, health, suicide, sexual violence, grief and vulnerable communities. Public interest is weighed against avoidable harm. Graphic material and identifying details are used only when they are essential to understanding the story.
Images, video and user material
News images and recordings should preserve the meaning of the original event. Material alterations, recreations, supplied media and illustrative images are identified. User-submitted material is verified as far as possible before publication.
Artificial intelligence
AI tools may assist with transcription, translation, organization or technical production, but a responsible editor reviews material before publication. AI-generated text or imagery is not presented as witnessed reporting, and significant synthetic media is labeled.
